Dangerous streets

Pell Street is one of the narrowest streets that I've come across in
New York. It's home to Joe Shanghai's and a bunch of other no name
restaurants. I always enjoy walking on this street. The sidewalk is so
narrow you usually do "walk" on the street.

Memorial weekend is here!

Any plans?

Friday night I'll be partying it up in New York. It's been awhile since I've posted anything about my recent outings. I was in Gettysburg last weekend and Boston the weekend before that. Great time. I'm touring the east coast! New Orleans next weekend and Queens, NY this weekend for Kenny's amazing annual BBQ.

Dance dance revolution

furnishing and little tidbits

Scouring craigslist and random design sites. I've come across quite a few fun/interesting/boring/way expensive sites. The market is so saturated. I can't quite make a decision on anything.

When living in a rental with two guys you buy things to be functional. In my case I found things that were functional. Now that I'm alone, every little detail seems to define your space. Everything down to the chopsticks in your drawer.

I just bought two chairs thinking they would fit my counter, not bar, space but it turns out they're just a little high. Considering chopping the legs down or should I just resell them? Trade them?

The spot next to my building (rice crepes)

I'm fully moved into my new place and I'm slowly exploring my
neighborhood. I found a nice spot next to my buidling that makes rice
crepes fresh to order. You can have them plain, with beef or with
small dried shrimp.

A cousin of mine who lives a block away from me suggested I check a
spot out on Monroe street. He claims it's better. I guess I'll have to
compare notes with him soon.

Moving back home...

I'm moving back home for a couple of weeks until my new place is done. I'm afraid. There's no internet connection and I think I still pay $5 a month for an AOL dial up of some sort. That's going to be interesting. Will I get logged off? Hmm...

It's been awhile since I've written here on Shitty Chef. Hope there are still people reading this crap. I'll be posting up before and after pictures of my apartment very soon.

The Big MOVE

My past few and next few weeks have been and will be hectic. I've been in the process of renovating, packing and will be moving back to my parents place for a week and off to my new spot.

During this time period I have traded in my social life, snapped at 2 friends, spent a crap load of money, lost a lot of sleep and ultimately stressed myself beyond belief. I hate how Home Depot's prices are TWICE the cost because of convenience. I had no time to plan much so a lot of things are on the whim. Every says it's all worth it. I agree it's all worth it but the bottom line is I'm happy to say I haven't reached a breaking point at all yet. Sure i'm stressed here and there but these "problems" I have are nothing compared to more real things going on out there.

Quote of the Day

Monday morning, the regular "how was your weekend" question.

Friend:
my weekend was kindof weird.. this guy i had a mild flirtation with for years whos a friend asked me out every day last week and i put myself on house arrest to avoid the seduction lol

Classic!

Custom Shirts!

http://www.shirtsmyway.com

My cousin just sent this link my way and it's a shirt site where you can fully customize your dress shirt to almost any way possible. It's very inexpensive and I plan on buying one soon just to see the quality.

Health Kick FAIL

I went to an all you can eat Korean BBQ joint last night. Pics to follow.

The health kick!

I'm back on health train. Oats, fruits, less processed items, more natural stuff. I figure if I replace eggs in the AM with soy fruits and oats I'm on track for a healthier longer life. I had chicken rice and beans last night. All natural foods. Maybe not the healthiest. Beats the hoho's and yodels I use to eat!

Oh so balanced!

What I failed to mention is fooddotout made a mean braised oxtail over grits the other night with figs wrapped with pancetta stuff goat cheese. The braised oxtail was inspired by our meal at Sorella.

New Yorkers were left to leap and jump over puddles from a dusting of snow that led to a torrential rain last week. Some did it in style while others landed in deep sludge.

Chinese New Year to do list.

Chinese New Year always symbolizes a new start. There are little check offs that you must do before the new year. Here are a few things along with a short explanation. Clean your room to symbolize a new start. Cut your hair before the new year because if you do it afterwards you "cut away" your bad luck. You can't shower the day of new years because you'll "wash away" your luck. I take bi monthly showers so we're all squared away with the shower thing.

This year is the year of the Ox. I don't know what that means but I do love me some oxtail stew on rice over at 69 Bayard Street.

Long weekend coming up!

I think I'll be writing all weekend. Nothing planned other than a party on Friday. Hmm...
possible topics:

Wii Fit
Update on my resolution of not drinking as much.
Parents are back in town.
How the weather is retarded here in NYC.
Upcoming possible trips.
How the shitty chef doesn't actually cook.
Other sites I have but haven't worked on.
My constant status updates on twitter and facebook.
Slow economy
Weddings that are coming up.

Plenty of topics to cover but at the end of the weekend I'll probably have nothing up.
Cheers!

Moustache

According to Wikipedia a moustache (or mustache[1]) is facial hair grown on the upper lip. Often the term implies that the wearer grows only upper-lip hair while shaving the hair on his chin and cheeks. Growth of all facial hair would constitute a beard.

I decided to shave my facial hair and leave a stache. In my opinion it didn't look good at all so I promptly shaved all my facial hair off earlier this morning.

Here's the anatomy of a stache by me.

Preop. Grow facial hair for about 10 days.

Apply shaving cream.

Real Estate Market Tanking...

The real estate in NYC is tanking. No big surprise about that. It's good and bad. Good news is that there's plenty of spaces at discount rates. Bad news is that there are plenty of spaces at discount rates.

Lets put things in perspective for some regular folk out there that rent. Regular folk who include me! I have a link on my firefox that shows craigslist listings in manhattan for under $1000. I click it once a month to see what's going. About 6 months ago I would see, at a max, about 10 listings. I click today and I see 50. click here!

Here's another scarey article from gothamist today. The article throws a bunch of numbers around.

I hope this brings an influx of people from out of town into NYC pumping money into our economy. It already has in a way. Lower prices in NYC brings investors and tourists from outside our country. Things won't even out but lets slow the bleed a bit.

Hectic! - Summation of the past Year.

I've been keeping my time occupied recently and haven't been able to post much. I keep telling myself to just do it already so here I go. During 08 there have been quite a lot of traveling, partying, eating and crazy weather.

My trip to China was an eye opener. Beautiful scenic views, amazing food, great people and a true culture shock. I've gone as a child but never as an adult. My senses were flooded. I have so many nice memories from there. The single bad memory was catching a stomach thing which cleared in 24 hours. It happens and I move on. Actually lost 10 pounds after gaining a solid 6. So netting a 4lb loss at the end of the trip. Ha!

The past year I've grown closer to my roommates. A few of my friends knew I never lived with anyone before moving back out to NYC. First year 07 was a tough one for me to adjust. Now I can say I'm fully broken in and ready to move out on my own in 09.

I've learned a lot with relationships this year. I've definitely grown as a person and people around me have helped me in the process. Everyone's perspectives are always helpful and help me carry on with my life.

I drank way too much this year. This year I've decided to give my liver a bit of a rest and try to steer myself into a healthier lifestyle. I figure I drank every weekend + an extra day or two mixed in there. 52 weekends in a year = 104 days + say about 25% of those weeks I drank on a weekday. Multiply that by atleast 3 drinks per session as an average = 375 total drinks in a year. Roughly $7 a drink and I spent a solid 2g's on drinks for the year. That math is completely wrong because I know I've drank way more than that.

Traveling for the year was great! I really didn't go anywhere until the 2nd half of 08. Hamptons, Jersey, LA twice, Atlanta, Miami, Philly for New Years and the giant kicker to China.

Culinary experiences were most definitely amazing. Summers are always about BBQ'ing it up and Kenny and George definitely always shine. Big apple BBQ was one of the most sweltering days of the year. Many nights at Wo Hop, Diners and street cart food have added to my cholesterol levels. Four steakhouses - Lugers, Wolfgangs, Chima (philly) and Robert's squared off that end. Still can't get a reservation at Momofuku Ko. I've padded the wallets of the BRGuest restaurant group. Had salty noodles at Ippudo, plenty of brunches at Essex, and many beers at The Smith which cost $6 now. No longer a $5 deal. Buckets of PBR a plenty at Black Bear. Free drinks at Essex, plenty of Mamosa's. Petron petron petron petron... How did I get back on drinking?

I'm quit blabbin and continue this another time.
